How good are mums!? Biological mothers, mother figures, step mums, grandmas, not yet mums, you guys all rock! Here at the Nonsense Maker we love making our mums feel special. We have got you covered for the perfect greeting card, but what is the perfect gift to give with it? We have constantly got our eye out for Mother’s Day gifts, birthday presents for her, or Christmas present for her. We can’t speak for all women, but here are a few ideas for gifts for mum courtesy of The Nonsense Maker.
Gifts for women who like to be pampered
You’d be hard pressed to find a woman out there (or man for that matter) who doesn’t love a little bit of pampering every now and then, but rarely do we justify treating ourselves. Did you know that the holy grail of aromatic skincare brands, Aesop, was founded in our very own Melbourne? If you haven’t been into one of these stores already we suggest grabbing mum and visiting in person. Aesop stores are like interior design daydreams, with products beautifully and meticulously displayed in aesthetically pleasing spaces. Hand creams, essential oils, skincare, haircare, fragrances, even dog shampoo! There is something for every mum here.
Gifts for women who like stationery
Let’s be real, all mums have to be organised to some degree. Between the house, workplace, children, friends, family, there is so much to do and so much to think about, mum life is busy! A beautiful monthly calendar is a thoughtful and very practical gift, plus it doubles as a revolving wall artwork all year round! Pair that with a handy pocket notebook that fits in her handbag, and some beautiful pens, pencils, and accessories from our friends at Zetta Florence, and hey presto you’ve got a stunning personalised stationary set she’ll love, and (hopefully) actually use!
Gifts for women who like ‘things’ and little treasures
If you’ve got a mum who treasures little treasures, adores ornaments, and could always have more knickknacks, here are a few potential stops to add to your gifts for mum search:
The Hub General Store
The Hub General Store is a gorgeous homewares store in Collingwood. The store itself is a charming red brick building with a big black door, and is stocked with modern designer products with an enchanting vintage feel.
Hope Street Space
In the back streets of Brunswick just off Sydney Road, Hope Street Space is a quirky store overflowing with knick-knacks and unique treasures, all wonderfully organised according to colour on shelves as high as the ceiling!

LoveLuvo
This lovey gift shop in Seddon has an even more a lovely ethos; “The good you do comes back to you”. LoveLuvo is a social enterprise started to create sustainable paid employment for disadvantaged members of the community. They have a great range of adorable gifts and homewares, and their products are all ethically made, locally sourced, and eco-friendly. Win, win, win!
One of a kind unique gifts for women
Your mum is special and unique, and she deserves a special and unique gift. We have no shortage of Australian artists and designers each with their own unique style and aesthetic, many of which sell original art and one of a kind pieces.
Head down to one of Melbourne’s many wonderfully curated design markets, where you can buy wall art prints, homewares, candles, jewellery, original artworks, and so much more! Events are back in full swing this year so be sure to check out one of the Finders Keepers Markets, The Big Design Market in December, or a smaller event from the guys behind The Rose Street Artist Market.
Gifts for women who like art
Choosing artwork for someone else can be a daunting task. If your mum is an art enthusiast or artist herself (and has space on her walls or shelves for more fine art prints!) she might love a gift voucher to put towards artwork from her favourite artist or gallery. Or you can set her up with an NGV membership which will give her discounted and priority entry to gallery events all year round. Then slip it into an Australian made greeting card and write her a lovely message to go with it.
Gifts for women who cook
Much like clothes and home decor, food trends change over time. 20 years later Donna Hay’s ‘Modern Classics’ are no longer feeling so modern. Time to give mums old cookbook collection an update! We love popping into local bookshops on our lunch breaks and perusing the great range of cookbooks, flipping through the pages and making grand plans for future dinner parties. Take a look at Timeout’s top picks for cookbooks in 2021 for some ideas.
Gifts for women who don’t want anything
Flowers and chocolates are always winner, especially if your mum has entirely too many things as it is. Meaningful, without cluttering up her cupboards. Melbourne made and founded Koko Black make amazing chocolate in a bunch of different flavours, including an Australian Native collection which celebrates our indigenous Australian botanicals. Pair this with some native flowers and an Australian greeting card for a cute Australian themed gift!
Gifts for mums to be and gifts for new mums
A mum to be is still a mum, and pregnancy is no walk in the park, so it totally counts! Plus you get to buy adorable newborn baby things! We love the adorable little outfits from our fellow Melbourne maker Retrobub, or the super sweet romper and bib sets from Bandicute, who are also Australian Made. Wall art prints make a lovely addition to a new baby’s room, and as an added bonus they won’t grow out of it in a few months!
